Public Record - Getting to the 'Core' of Metro Broadband Wireless

Fast Track to Deploying New Energy Technologies through Revenue Share from City-Wide Broadband Wireless Core Infrastructures
July 19, 2008 – Brad Bowman (click to email me)

This quick summary will outline a grass roots program that will enable newer technologies and infrastructures to feed off themselves to provide the much needed business model, products and services desired by cities and communities throughout the US and the World to:

  • Combat global warming and our dependence on foreign oil
  • Provide much needed money to develop and deploy newer energy technologies and;
  • Provide much needed broadband wireless infrastructures for our cities and communities

This unique business and revenue share model will enable communities and cities to invest in their own WiMAX wireless infrastructures while providing much needed monies and investment to wean us off our dependence on foreign oil through the use of newer technologies that are gaining in notoriety and awareness though grass roots efforts by T Boone Pickens, Al Gore, and other organizations.

Benefits

This new business model provides:

  • Significant and recurring ROI and revenue for investors
  • Significant monies for city and community outreach programs
  • Significant monies for nationwide/local energy policy/technology change
  • Significant monies for development and deployment of newer energy technologies and/or;
  • Significant monies for city and community “Green” programs
No City Monies Needed

A local public/private partnership will be established in your city/community to operate the network and manage the "Community Fund" (Revenue Share). Private capital is already in place for this business model so no monies are required by the City.

AccessDelray.org – Delray Beach, FL.

AccessDelray.org is a 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to promoting local public/private ownership and operations of community or city-wide broadband wireless networks. The business and revenue model are truly unique in that a significant amount of monies generated through monthly subscriptions to their upcoming 3.65 city-wide WiMAX network will be allocated and flowing back to the community to fund a variety of programs that may have been on the chopping block because of budget constraints or to fund new community outreach programs.

With the large incumbents (ATT, Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner, etc.) preparing to launch their own wireless in our cities and communities and competing to pull every dollar they can from our cities and communities it is important that cities and communities take control of their broadband futures right now.

The 3.65 WiMAX is extremely conducive to city/community official’s desire for their own wireless infrastructures (or the much touted Municipal Broadband). These types of networks will be able to provide local businesses, citizenry, and government with core network services that will provide for funding and/or service for the following:

  • Enhanced public safety, first responder applications
  • Municipal departmental applications
  • Low cost / free internet core access for public, residents, businesses, visitors/tourists
  • Digital Access, Inclusion, Literacy programs
  • Economic stimulus
  • Health and financial services
  • Public access television
  • Public utilities
  • Local business internet marketing services, residential, and community portals
  • Energy Management Services (EMS) / Green Initiatives / New Energy Technologies
  • School system access / Educational tools
  • Public employee services
  • VPN’s / VAR’s / Resellers
  • Employer Outreach / Distance Learning & Training / Job Creation
  • Visitor Services / Hospitality Packages
  • Private security / video surveillance / DVR access
  • Digital connectors programs

These are core services that need to be in place and become part of any city-wide or municipal network.

The Business & Revenue Share Model

We have provided an excel spreadsheet that explains the operating and revenue share model. As you will see this model is based on an average sized city or community with 65,000 people, 32,000 households, and 6,000 businesses.

The revenue split is 60/40… so 60% of revenues derived from services will flow back to the community and the other 40% will go towards ROI, debt and OpEx. These communities can use this money at their discretion, but considerable monies can be afforded for both local and national climate change initiatives and investments.

You can also plug in your own numbers based on the demographics of your own city or community. The “Community Fund” numbers in located lower left of the spreadsheet.

Conclusion

As you can see this model addresses many of the important issues facing our communities, cities, local governments, and our nation. By providing much needed wireless infrastructures for our cities and communities we are actually able to fund climate change initiatives and newer energy technologies.

This funding comes from the ground up… from our communities so the speed in which all of this can be implemented is a relatively short period of time, compared to the next 10-50 years that most initiatives are calling for.

This is doable because we are no longer reliant on large, greedy (ATT, Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner, etc.) incumbents to provide for our city or community wireless core infrastructures and internet access. We can “cut the cord” to our houses and businesses, receive cheaper, better fixed and mobile ubiquitous wireless access within our coverage areas (and while roaming) while funding both local and national community outreach and energy policy programs.
